1. Overview
On 03 October 2023, Neftaly, in collaboration with Modual Mining, conducted a one-day Advice & Referral and Paralegal Training session for 3 community members in Burgersfort. This program is part of Neftaly’s ongoing efforts to empower individuals with legal awareness and access to justice through basic paralegal education and referral services.
2. Objectives of the Training
- To provide community members with a foundational understanding of legal rights and procedures
- To build capacity in offering basic legal advice and support to others
- To inform participants about available legal and social services
- To enhance access to justice through effective referral practices
- To promote responsible and ethical paralegal practice within communities
3. Training Content Covered
The session focused on the following key areas:
- Introduction to Paralegal Work – roles, responsibilities, and limitations
- Basic Legal Rights – including human rights, labour rights, and family law
- Legal Documentation – understanding affidavits, contracts, and complaint procedures
- Advice and Referral Techniques – identifying cases and referring appropriately
- Overview of the South African legal system and key support institutions
4. Participant Engagement
- All 3 participants actively participated in discussions and case study exercises
- Real-life legal scenarios were presented and workshopped in small groups
- Participants were encouraged to share local legal challenges and concerns
- A brief pre- and post-assessment was used to evaluate learning outcomes
5. Outcomes and Impact
- Participants left the session with an improved understanding of basic legal processes
- Each participant received printed materials to assist with future referrals
- The group expressed a strong interest in continued legal education
- One participant intends to volunteer at a local advice office

- Engage local legal professionals for guest facilitation in future sessions

The Advice & Referral and Paralegal Training session held on 03 October 2023 by Neftaly, in partnership with Modual Mining, was a meaningful and empowering engagement. It successfully provided basic legal tools and knowledge to the participants, enabling them to better support their communities and navigate the legal system. This initiative highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in building informed, rights-aware citizens.
