A Stolen Future

When a child is forced into marriage, their future is often decided for them. Instead of pursuing education, developing critical life skills, or engaging in civic life, they are thrust into adult roles prematurely. These children, especially girls, are expected to raise families, perform domestic duties, and often endure economic and emotional hardship.

Leadership requires opportunity. It requires confidence, education, and time to explore one’s abilities. Child marriage robs individuals of all three.

Education Disruption

Education is a foundational pathway to leadership. Yet, child marriage is one of the leading causes of school dropouts among girls. Without access to secondary and tertiary education, a child’s ability to learn public speaking, decision-making, and critical thinking skills is dramatically reduced.

Without education, how can we expect these young individuals to lead in government, business, or social movements?

Undermining Voice and Agency

Leadership also demands a sense of personal agency—the belief that you have the right to make choices and shape your future. Child marriage silences this voice. Many young brides are not allowed to express their opinions, participate in community decisions, or even advocate for themselves, let alone for others.

This loss of voice echoes through generations, creating cycles of disempowerment that are hard to break.

Health and Emotional Toll

Child marriage often leads to early pregnancies, which pose significant health risks to both mother and child. Chronic health issues, trauma from abuse, and mental health challenges further diminish a young person’s capacity to step into leadership roles later in life.

You cannot lead when your life is consumed by survival.

Breaking the Cycle

To unleash the leadership potential of all young people, we must end child marriage. This means:

• Enforcing laws that protect children’s rights.
• Providing access to quality education and mentorship.
• Supporting families with resources so they don’t feel forced into marrying off their children.
• Creating platforms where young people can speak, lead, and inspire change.
