    Neftaly HEAL Project Event Report
Event Name: Health Education and Wellness
    Date: 11 July 2025
    Location: Diepsloot, Neftaly
Task Team Members: Daniel Makano, Tumelo Makano, Andrice Macuacua, Obakeng Mahwai

    1. Introduction

On the 11th of June 2025, the Neftaly HEAL Project successfully hosted a Health Education and Wellness event in Diepsloot. The event aimed to educate the community—especially young people—about key health issues including sexually transmitted infections (STIs), gender-based violence (GBV), and general disease prevention. This initiative was a collaborative effort between local health professionals and community stakeholders to empower the community with accurate health information and improved access to services.

    2. Health Education: STI and Disease Prevention Session

Health Promoter: Mr. Sylven Malele from Rhiza Babuyile Clinic

Mr. Sylven Malele led a dynamic and informative session focused on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and general disease prevention. The presentation included topics such as:

    • Types of STIs, their symptoms, and long-term consequences if left untreated
    • Prevention strategies including condom use and regular testing
    • Myths and facts around sexual health and STIs
    • How and where to access treatment services

The session concluded with an open Community Q&A which allowed participants to engage directly with the health promoter. This interactive segment created a safe space for individuals to ask personal or sensitive questions in a non-judgmental environment.

    Anticipated Outcomes of Session 1:

    • Improved knowledge of STIs and their prevention
    • Reduced stigma around sexual health conversations
    • Encouraged early testing and treatment
    • Promoted informed and responsible sexual decision-making

    3. Health Care Wellness & GBV Awareness Session

Testing and Health Services Provided By: Vuselela Team from OR Tambo Clinic, Diepsloot EXT 2

The second component of the event focused on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) awareness and access to health services. The Vuselela Team provided:

    • On-site HIV Testing
    • Health screenings
    • Distribution of contraceptives and PrEP information

Participants were also sensitized on issues of GBV, including:

    • What constitutes GBV and how to recognize abuse
    • How and where to report GBV cases
    • The importance of consent, boundaries, and healthy relationships
    • Available support services for survivors of GBV

    Anticipated Outcomes of Session 2:

    • Increased understanding of GBV and reporting procedures
    • Empowered individuals to take control of their sexual and physical health
    • Improved access to preventive care including PrEP and condoms
    • Strengthened community awareness on healthy relationships

    4. Task Team Involvement

The event was made possible through the active involvement and dedication of the Neftaly HEAL Project task team. The following members played key roles in planning, organizing, and supporting the event activities:

    • Daniel Makano – Welcoming our visitors and making sure people sign the register
    • Tumelo Makano – Monitoring and taking of pictures.
    • Andrice Macuacua – Crowd control and introduction of the visitors.
    • Obakeng Mahwai – Crowd management

Their efforts contributed to the smooth execution of both the health education and wellness segments of the day.

    5. Conclusion

The Health Education and Wellness event achieved its goal of educating the community and providing access to vital health services. Through collaboration with Rhiza Babuyile Clinic and the Vuselela Team from OR Tambo Clinic, the event reached a significant number of youth and community members, leaving them better informed, empowered, and supported in matters of health and wellbeing.

The HEAL Project continues to play a vital role in bridging the gap between communities and health services, fostering a culture of awareness, prevention, and empowerment.

    1. Overview

On 11 December 2023, Neftaly, in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Social Development, successfully conducted a focused Advice and Referral session for 3 participants in Diepsloot. This initiative forms part of Neftaly’s commitment to ensuring individuals in vulnerable communities can access accurate information, social support, and referral pathways to relevant services.

    2. Objectives of the Session

    • To provide one-on-one advice tailored to the personal and social challenges of each participant
    • To refer individuals to appropriate government and non-government service providers
    • To educate participants about available social assistance and their rights
    • To strengthen linkages between communities and local social support networks

    3. Content and Services Provided

    The session covered the following:

    • Assessment of Needs – identifying each participant’s primary challenges
    • Social Services Overview – including SASSA, shelter services, and food security assistance
    • Direct Referrals – connecting participants with relevant service providers such as social workers and shelters

    • Strengthened trust between Neftaly, the Gauteng Department of Social Development, and the community

    6. Challenges and Recommendations

    • Emotional intensity of individual cases required extended time and sensitivity
    • Limited service provider availability in the area delayed some referrals

    Recommendations:

    • Arrange for on-site visits by service provider representatives for quicker response
    • Include basic needs support (e.g., food parcels) in future sessions where appropriate

    7. Conclusion

The Advice and Referral session delivered on 11 December 2023 by Neftaly, in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Social Development, made a meaningful impact on the lives of 3 individuals. Despite the small group size, the depth of engagement and the direct support provided underscored the importance of targeted interventions. Neftaly remains committed to bridging the gap between communities and vital support services.
